Firstly, where does the name The Dryas come from?
It’s not a very exciting story to be honest haha! It comes from a scientific/geographical term ‘The Younger Dryas’ that I read about. A friend suggested ditching the ‘Younger’ part and going with ‘The Dryas’. We intended on coming up with something ‘better’ haha, but then we thought let’s just roll with it.
Can you tell us a bit more about the band? Where are you from and how did you all meet?
We’re all originally from Folkestone in Kent. We met through forming a band when we was about 15/16 and we’ve been writing music together, as various different entities, ever since. Now we all live in Brighton.
How would you sum up your style in three words?
This is a difficult questions to answer in terms of musical style because we enjoy lots of different genres of music. However, to pin it down to three words, I would say we strive to be bold, authentic and modern with our songwriting.
You released today your latest single Boy. Where did you find inspiration for this song?
The inspiration from this song comes from Hudd’s personal battles with mental health. Without trying to come across like we’re following a trend, it’s important that our music comes from a place of personal experience or perspective. We’d like to think this song has an element of positivity amongst the pain, particularly in the music, that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Is this a hint at more new music on the way?
Absolutely – we have another single coming at the beginning of July and an EP later on in the year!
Who produced this? Have you worked with them before?
This song is a co-production between Hudd [singer] and Kris Harris. We have worked with Kris before on some unreleased material and have a great relationship with him.
Can we expect to see any music videos any time soon?
Without giving too much away we have something coming next week, so keep an eye out on our social media!
Are there any plans to play shows when we are allowed back out?
Prior to lock-down we were in rehearsals every week getting ready for our first show. Obviously that’s not the case at the moment, but as soon as we’re allowed, we will be back in the rehearsal room and hopefully we’ll be able to play our first show before the end of the year.
How have you been keeping busy in lockdown?
To be honest, we’ve been very fortunate because of this release, and the next one, that we have been keeping very busy. Getting everything ready to put out our first song has taken a lot of time, so the lock-down has been a bit of a blessing in disguise. We’ve also been working hard on new material for an EP coming out later in the year.
Where can we find out more about you?
The best place to go is thedryas.com where you can sign up to our mailing list (don’t worry we won’t spam you). Then after that you can follow us on social media @thedryas on Instagram and Facebook, @the_dryas on Twitter!
Anything you would like to tell us?
We really hope you enjoy the music and just to keep an eye on what we’re up to. We have lots planned for the rest of the year and will hopefully be playing our first live show as soon as we’re allowed!
I’d like to thank Luke for taking the time to answer my questions and wish him and the rest of the band the best of luck with today’s release.
