I caught up with Johnny from THE DESERT about their latest single Disappearing Act

So we last chatted (briefly) after your set at Dot to Dot Bristol last year. What have you been up to since then?

We spent a lot of time last year recording new material, which we’ve just begun to release.  We also played a few festivals last summer which was really fun.  During lockdown we’ve been finding ways to keep working with one another.  We’ve recorded a couple of covers, sending the tracks back and forth to each other, and we were able to take part in the fantastic Colston Hall Bristol Takeover last weekend.

Have you played any interesting gigs? Any funny stories to tell?

We played at SXSW last year which was pretty amazing.  However, there was sheer panic when we thought all of our electrical equipment had stopped working just before going on stage.  Thankfully the brilliant engineers that were working the night fixed it just in time!

You recently released your latest single Disappearing Act. What does this song mean to you?

Lyrically it’s about the fear of starting something with someone new when you’re still stuck in the past.  Musically it represents a change in the way we write together – it was quite collaborative.

Where do you look for inspiration?

All over really.  Listening to music is always a big source.  Gina finds clarity in writing lyrics about her life experiences.

Is this a hint at more new music on the way?

It is.  We have a few tracks in the pipeline that we can’t wait to share soon.  Next up is a Kate Bush cover.

Who produced this music? Have you worked with them before?

We worked with Steve Osbourne on four new singles, and just before lockdown we went to Rockfield to record some more with Joe Jones.

Were you supposed to play any shows that have now been cancelled?

Yes we had a showcase in London organised for May which we missed out on, and we were due to play the BBC Intro Stage at the Big Feastival which has just been cancelled which we’re pretty gutted about.

Are there any plans to play any when we are allowed back out?

Not at the moment! Who knows when that’s gonna be so we’re biding our time currently.

Which artists are you currently listening to?

The 1975, Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey, Arvo Part, Four Tet.  There’s a few playlists on our Spotify that you can check out.

Where can we find out more about you?

Instagram is probably the best place!  Follow @thedesertofficial.

Anything you would like to tell us?

Jonny is allergic to peanuts.

I’d like to thank Johnny for taking the time to answer my questions and wish him and the rest of the band the best success with all their new music
